weBelong: the network reinventing social media by eliminating toxicity and creating a safe online space for marginalized young people

weBelong brings together a community of over 10,000 monthly users to celebrate diversity – exchanging ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ for meaningful interactions

Social media is being reinvented for a new generation via weBelong: an online platform offering marginalized young audiences a safe space to celebrate diversity.

Developed by technology and wellness San Francisco’s HoloAsh, weBelong eliminates the toxicity of social media by trading ‘likes’, ‘followers’ and ‘reactions’ for features that facilitate and support meaningful interactions.

Already home to 10,000 monthly users with over 30,000 downloads, the social media platform was designed to help teens and teens who feel ‘misfit’ to connect with other like-minded people – representing a healthier and more authentic alternative to the likes of Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat.

Launched in 2021, weBelong focuses on championing uniqueness at every turn. The app has already proven popular with the LGBTQ+ community, with features like pronouns added to each screen to prevent users from being misinterpreted.

The platform makes it easy to connect with others based on common interests, providing a safe space where people can talk and share issues with a warm and welcoming community.

Messaging and voice chat tools ensure fast and fast communication, but weBelong also prioritizes privacy – with devices only accessible via password.

HoloAsh founder and CEO Yoshua Kishi – a self-proclaimed “social misfit” – said he was inspired to create weBelong due to a lack of authenticity on existing social media channels.

“Teenagers tend to have self-esteem issues, and features like ‘likes’ only add to that anxiety,” says Yoshua.

“Many of today’s social media sites are simply not authentic. But we wanted to change that. On weBelong, there are no numbers for other people’s likes or followers – so it’s easy to express your feelings in a better way.

“As someone with ADHD, I’ve spent time feeling left out in the past, and wanted to build a space where ‘social misfits’ could get together, talk and discuss things.

“On weBelong you can find people you can really connect with – it’s a social media site that really helps people.

“Our users have already told us that they feel so much better after using the app.”

weBelong is now available for download on Google and Apple stores.
