Ten unwritten rules of social interaction that everyone should probably follow | indy100

Trying to navigate social interactions is like a scene from a Hitchcock movie: creepy, confusing, and someone always ends up getting hurt (or in Hitchcock’s case, mentally scarred for life).

The redditors have created this thread which describes some of the most important unwritten rules that must be followed, otherwise crippling awkwardness.

Here are the top ten:

1. If you are walking in a group, do not take all the way

We’ve all been there; a coffee with soy milk in one hand, a newspaper under the other as we rush to work when all of a sudden we suddenly stop. A capricious group of tourists decided to set up camp in the middle of the sidewalk. It is not a difficult concept to understand: to stand aside, to let people pass.

2. Always get everything in writing

There is nothing worse than being cheated out of your money because you couldn’t provide proof that you did, in fact pay your water bill.

3. The loudspeaker is not intended for public use.

Headphones were invented by Nathaniel Baldwin so that you can maintain your privacy when making phone calls. They weren’t invented so that you and the 100 people you share your train with could hear your mom screaming on the phone.

4. Don’t be late

It is an age-old rule, and people are still wrong. If there has been a car accident on your way to your friend / other important person, that’s okay. But when you made a date at noon and show up at three in the afternoon because you were sitting in your pajamas watching Making a Murderer? Disagree.

5. Cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze

There is nothing worse than being sprayed with a wet, unruly sneeze.

6. If you are at a show / concert and see someone fall into a mosh pit, help them get up.

It’s just the common concert etiquette.

7. Report

Signage is a language you learned to get your driver’s license. Use it.

8. Never laugh at someone’s laughter.

Chances are they are laughing at you.

9. Eating the largest slice of pizza is okay. Do not take the second largest slice either.

Eating pizza is a social affair, so don’t be greedy.

10. If you open something, close it again

Cupboards, spread, internet tablets …
