Main priority to keep CUB clean; more exhausting job since the start of the pandemic

Working at CUB during the COVID-19 pandemic is more exhausting than busier semesters.

Working on campus offers many benefits for student employees, including feeling connected to campus and the Coug community.

Compton Union Building manager Daniel Armijo said he started working at CUB to gain experience for his future career. Armijo specializes in management information systems.

He is responsible for assisting with reception and oversees all day-to-day operations of the building.

Since the start of the pandemic, the main priority for CUB employees has been cleaning up and ensuring COVID-19 policies are followed, Armijo said.

Dana Torlone is a senior at WSU specializing in management information systems, who also started working as a building manager for CUB two years ago.

Working at CUB during the pandemic is exhausting because Torlone said she was just sitting at a desk and no one really came in. She said this is even more exhausting during a pandemic than it normally is.

“At the start of last year we had so many people coming, we were always standing up to help people and I found it more enjoyable,” she said.

According to CUB website, students using CUB facilities must complete their daily attestation, wear a mask, comply with capacity restrictions and clean their space.

A new cleaning system has also been put in place. Handrails, buttons, tables and the information desk are cleaned hourly, Armijo said.

“We are allowed to hold certain events and meetings, but there are still fairly strict restrictions on the number of people and types of events. The rules relaxed a bit with phase 2, ”he said.

Banks, some restaurants, the bookmaker and study areas are still open, Armijo said.

With WSU doing landing tests, students are starting to study more this semester compared to the last, he said.

“I always appreciate [working at the CUB], it’s less hours and I’m working with a few different people from CUB right now, ”Armijo said.

Armijo said he got to see familiar faces from the past and work with new people. Working at CUB is a great excuse to get out of your home and see the people around Pullman, he said.

Armijo said he felt more connected to campus and to other Cougs, which is an advantage of working for the university.

“Talking to my coworkers is the highlight of my time,” Torlone said. “It’s nice to have this social interaction every now and then. “
