Central Michigan Life – Wayside Central bouncer fired following social media complaints

Several Central Michigan University students have anonymously posted comments about their negative interactions with a Wayside Central bouncer on social media.

In less than 48 hours, this man, a student at CMU, was fired.

“After conducting several in-person and telephone interviews, we have been made aware of incidents of misconduct and have decided to terminate the employee,” John Hunter, owner of Wayside Central and The Cabin, said in a press release. .

CMU students posted on Yik Yak, a local, anonymous social media app, and CMU Confessions, an anonymous Twitter account, to share their stories about the employee.

On Sunday, a Change.org petition was created in hopes of getting the bouncer fired. The petition received over 350 signatures.

The press release says the management team and owners of Wayside Central learned of the situation late Sunday evening. Monday afternoon, the employee was placed on administrative leave.

“Since being made aware of the issue, we have made active efforts to identify and contact those affected to gather more information,” the press release read.

The individual was described as a “temporary part-time employee”. Hunter said the employee worked as a bouncer at Wayside Central and as a kitchen staff member at The Cabin when needed.

The press release says Wayside Central has addressed the issue with the Mount Pleasant Police Department and plans to continue working with them.

“We will not tolerate any type of harassment at our facility,” the statement said.

Civil Rights and Title IX Investigator Eltaro Hooper confirmed that the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity (OCRIE) has received reports referencing the Yik Yak and CMU Confessions publications.

Hunter said he was implementing better guidelines for the future of his businesses. He plans to use SAFE Bar Network, which specializes in helping bars, restaurants and nightclubs prevent sexual harassment and assault.

“Our number one goal is to ensure that our bars remain a safe place for our customers, and we understand the importance of educating our employees to help with these efforts,” the press release reads. “We will continue to prioritize implementations that can be put in place to keep our businesses secure.”
