What the Internet says: Not only did the Dunk Special Edition of Social Status captivate sneaker fans, the story behind the project resonated with audiences, who believe Social Status added real depth and authentic community spirit to the project.
What we say: Social Status has announced that the release of the “Chocolate Milk” colorway for its upcoming Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” collaboration has been delayed. Whereas previously the release date was set for September 4, it was later pushed back to September 10.
Likewise, the “Strawberry Milk” colorway was set to drop on September 18 but is now “TBA,” according to Social Status.
The sneaker, which was specially designed and created for social status, is not a top, bottom or middle. This sneaker does not exist outside of this collaboration, which makes it all the more special.
The inspiration for the project is close to the founder of Social Status, James Whitner, and the heart of his team: the free lunch. The two colourways of the Social Status x Nike Dunk Free Lunch are chocolate and strawberry milk nods that are part of the government aid program that supports underprivileged and underprivileged children across the United States.
But the project does more than raise awareness of the gaps in wealth, resources and opportunities that many children – mostly from minorities – still face today. Whitner and his team also remodeled the East Liberty store so that social and educational spaces are in front of the retail space, they opened an art gallery in the same location to break down barriers to entry into the art world for underserved communities, and they have renovated and will operate a community center in Old Whitner.
This project, like so many other companies in the Whitaker Group, is global and strives to bring real and lasting change, aided by storytelling through the product. To learn more about Social Status x Nike Dunk’s “Free Lunch” project, visit our exclusive interview with Whitner.
The Social Status x Nike Dunk “Free Lunch” Pack first launches with “Chocolate Milk” (September 10) and will follow with “Strawberry Milk” (TBA) online and in-store on Social Status.
