Craft It: Countdown Rings

I love making countdowns with the kids. They really enjoy seeing the days dwindle down to some exciting event that they are looking forward to happening. It helps minimize the “is ____ happening today?”. We mostly use countdown chains to countdown events. All three kids know how to tear off rings from their countdown chains. We usually use countdown rings to count down the days until Christmas but since the kids all have LEGO advent calendars this year, I got creative, and we made countdown rings to count down the days until Grandma comes to visit. I think the kids are just as excited about Grandma coming, as they are about Christmas day.

  • I let the kids cut out some of the strips, while I cut out other strips for them.  I generally cut out about 2in strips.

  • After the strips of paper were cut out, the kids colored all the paper with markers.  We don’t use markers very often, so it is always an exciting day when we use markers, instead of crayons.

  • We use tape to connect the sides of the paper to create the rings.

  • We hang the countdown rings on the tree as garland.
